GUEST POST Simon Chapman: The 5D and me « POV

Peekaboo was a historic shoot for me – it was the first time in my career that my main unit camera was the same as the behind-the-scenes and stills camera [wielded by Sam Clark]. This was odd, to say the least, and slightly off-putting, as his camera often looked bigger and more impressive. I quickly got over this comparison and began to concentrate on the task at hand : shoot a bloody good film.

Damien and I decided very early on to use the Canon 5D Mark II, but as it was so new and neither of us had used it before, we had to shoot a test. I grabbed a camera and Damien, Kristen [Anderson, my wife and Peekaboo’s production designer], my daughter [yes, she is now part of my official camera crew] and I went to our hero car park location one night and shot a few different tests using just the available light.

I tried various ISO speeds to see how ‘noisy’ the pictures might be and tried different exposures to test the latitude of the camera. We transferred that footage and had the good folk at Cutting Edge post convert it to view on their baselight system for viewing and grading. Then we watched the footage on their 2k barco projector on the big screen.

When Damien and I sat in the theatre waiting for the pictures to come up on the big screen, I was apprehensive to say the least. I thought, it can’t be all that good, as it’s a stills camera that just happens to shoot video. How wrong I was.

As soon as the first image came up, I was blown away. It looked clean, sharp and filmic. We played around with the footage, grading it darker and lighter, looking for problems, but ultimately we decided that we would use the camera for the shoot. We also decided to frame the movie in widescreen-scope format as it gives the film a big-screen movie feel.

It certainly has its limitations, especially for focus and movement. The rolling shutter creates a slight ‘wobble’ on some erratic camera movement and focus is critical [thanks Ollie, our focus puller, for being so patient with the new format]. But these limitations didn’t sway our decision. We got the look we wanted and I loved that we all embraced the new technology.

The very supportive guys at Panavision [thanks Jemore for all your advice] supplied our equipment, including a Canon 24-70mm, my main lens, a 70-200mm and a 16-35mm. We had a Zacuto shoulder rig with an onboard monitor.

I chose a zoom lens over prime lenses  because having the very young actors in our cast meant we had to be able to keep rolling and find various shots very quickly. At times, it was almost documentary in style. I kept lighting to an absolute minimum. We had a battery powered 1ft LED light, and 2 kinos. I could shoot all our interiors at 1000ASA, which meant I could shoot primarily with available light. We just helped it along when needed. Thanks to Luke [Weatherstone, gaffer] for being the one man lighting team.

As our fabulous editor [Katie Flaxman] was also our on-set data wrangler, it meant that we could give her our footage to download immediately and check if we had and technical problems but also watch scenes we shot in the morning cut together by lunch time. It was fantastic to see if we needed to pick-up any extra shots.

We had wonderful actors who were also interested in our new little baby, and we all felt like this was probably the first of many shoots on a hybrid stills/movie camera. Who knows what’s next, maybe shooting a feature. [ed – yes, Savage!]

Morton week 5 post « Digital Graffiti (Working Title)

This week I continued to work out which projector we would need, and therefore contacted Barco about the projector that Meeting Tomorrow has recommended. I received confirmation that the technicians are actually testing the projector in their warehouse with the same set up that we are looking to use is (side mounted and keystoned). Final documentation and confirmation of using this projector will be viewable shortly.

I also received great news from the Good Idea Fund… they have awarded us $6000 funding for the project.

I have also been in contact with Ray Westphal, which feels totally mind-blowing/unreal  but yeah, I have a meeting with him on Thursday:)

I spent a good amount of time this week making some custom textures for my bouncy balls, linking all the concentrations in the college to the college. I’m happy Ted suggested that because I think it’s coming along well. I also went back to that damn curtain animation and spent some time redesigning that scene. The composition does not bleed over the edges anymore, and it has some more architectural components that convey depth. I think it looks pretty sick, and hopefully it’s the last time anyone will have to work on that curtain ever again!

Tomorrow I’m meeting Dr. David Ruth, so i’ve rendered out some high quality images to show him and prepared some notes. I’m not sure where the meeting is going to lead us now that we have full sponsorship, but it’s still a great opportunity for networking.

Next week I want to have all the animations stitched together (kind of what I wanted for this week, however, competing to get computers with angry sophomores and juniors who have mid-terms put the cabash on accomplishing that).
